Simple & Quick Tulle Bustle
Hello friends! It's been a while since I shared anything, but such is life! I've got a couple of new pieces of content to share with you. Today I would like to give you a quick how-to on making a simple tie-on tulle bustle. So here we go!
This easy tie-on bustle is perfect for giving a little added volume to Victorian or Steampunk looks when worn under lightweight fabric. Alternately, you could use colorful materials and wear it on the outside for a feisty look. You can adjust the number of layers--the more tulle you use the more voluminous it gets!
So to get started, here are the materials you need:
- Scissors
- Twill tape
- Tulle net fabric, I used white
- Thread to match your tulle (not pictured)
- Measuring Tape
- Sewing needle
Step 1:
Measure out a length of twill tape that will comfortably tie around your waist. Tie a knot 1 inch from the end of the tape on both ends.
Step 2:
Measure out two lengths of tulle fabric. The length will be for your layers, so you will need to cut the first layer twice as long as you would like your top layer to be, and the second layer needs to be twice as long as you want your bottom layer to be. The same principle applies to any other layers you may want to add. I think I used 1 yard for my top layer and 2 yards for my bottom layer. This made my completed top layer 18 inches and my completed bottom layer 36 inches long.
Step 3:
Find the middle point of the length of your longer piece of fabric (i.e., if your fabric is 2 yards, find the 1-yard point) and gather it all the way across the width. Being careful not to let go of the gathers, slip half of the fabric around the twill tape at the center back, allowing half of the fabric to fall beneath the tape and half to remain on top.
You should have a single layer that looks like this:
Step 4:
Repeat Step 3 with your shorter piece of fabric. Now you have this double layer:
So pretty! You can adjust your gathers to your preferred width across the back.
Step 5:
Pinch down your layers around your twill tape and pin close to the bottom of the twill tape through all layers so you can see the waistband.
Step 6:
Starting behind the twill tape waistband and using a herringbone stitch, stitch through all tulle layers across the back of the waist. .
After tying off the thread, YOU ARE DONE! Yay! You made a thing! Now wasn't that easy?
